Studying with us
Do I have to attend classes?
No. Everything is online. You study in short lessons of 15–20 minutes, following a personal schedule worked out from your start date, whenever suits you.
What do I need to study?
A smartphone, tablet or computer with internet access, and an email address. To register you will also upload a copy of your ID.
What if I fall behind?
Your schedule shows what is due each week, and we send reminders if you have not been active. If life gets in the way, most providers let you defer once, within a set period after starting — a fee may apply. Your provider’s learner terms have the details.
I am under 18. Can I register?
Yes. When you register, a parent or guardian gives their consent and contact details.
Fees & payments
Can I pay in instalments?
Many programmes can be paid in two instalments: half when you register and the rest by a due date set by the provider. We email you a payment link and reminders before it is due.
How do I pay?
Online through PayFast, South Africa’s secure payment gateway, which accepts cards, instant EFT and other methods. Some providers also accept a direct EFT, which they confirm for you.
What happens if I miss a payment?
Your access is paused after a short grace period, and switches back on automatically as soon as the payment comes through. Your progress is kept.
Can I get a refund?
Each provider has a refund window, set out in its learner terms, which you accept when you register. Contact your provider within that window to ask for a refund.
Accreditation
What is the difference between an accredited qualification and a short course?
An accredited qualification is registered with a SETA or the QCTO and carries NQF credits. You build a Portfolio of Evidence that registered assessors and moderators sign off. A short course or workshop builds a skill and ends with a certificate of completion.
How do I know a programme is accredited?
Each programme page shows the accrediting body (SETA or QCTO), the NQF level, the credits and the SAQA qualification ID where they apply.
What is a Portfolio of Evidence (PoE)?
The collection of tasks and evidence that shows you are competent. You submit it online, unit by unit. An assessor marks it, a moderator may check it, and you get feedback on every submission.
What do I receive when I finish?
Accredited learners receive a Statement of Results for each completed unit and a final one. On QCTO qualifications we guide you through the external assessment (EISA); the certificate is issued by the QCTO. Short courses end with a certificate of completion.
Organisations & sponsors
Can we pay for our employees or bursary holders?
Yes. You arrange a block of seats on a programme with the provider; each learner you add takes a seat and is linked to you as their sponsor. The learner pays nothing themselves.
What can we see about our learners?
Their progress, recent activity and results, in the sponsor portal and a weekly email digest, with reports you can download as PDF, Word or CSV. You only ever see the learners you sponsor.
Training providers
Who can run their training on Stratum?
Any South African training provider — accredited (SETA or QCTO) or not — offering qualifications, short courses or workshops.
Do learners pay us directly?
Yes. Payments go to your own PayFast merchant account, and you can also record EFTs, offer instalments and create promo codes and vouchers.
Will learners see our brand?
Yes. You get your own public pages with your name, logo and colours, and every email to your learners carries your branding and your support address.
